Roatan Overview

Roatan is a Caribbean island that is part of Honduras. Roatan has blue skies, clear turquoise water, and year round temperatures mostly in the 70s and 80s. Roatan lies 30 miles off the coast of Honduras and is 33 miles long and averages 1.5 miles wide, making it about 50 square miles in area. Roatan has lush forests, white sand beaches, many bays and coves, and dramatic rocky shores. As the island is narrow with a central ridge, ocean views are available almost everywhere.

With a total population of only 70,000, Roatan is still mostly undeveloped. Roatan is surrounded by 34 miles of coral reef and has hundreds of recognized dive sites, offering world-class scuba diving and outstanding snorkeling, as well as deep-sea fishing and fly-fishing on the flats. The island has everything from full service resorts to smaller more personal hotels to homes and condos for rent. While Honduras is a Spanish speaking country, Roatan used to be British and English is still widely used, and property and title records are much more reliable than most other parts of Latin America.

Roatan is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Honduras is a stable democracy that is encouraging tourism and foreign investment. As a Caribbean island with a sizable income base, Roatan is isolated from many of the mainland's problems, and receives a sizable portion of the country's tourism. Honduras experienced 672,000 tourist visits in 2004, which increased to 749,000 in 2005. The average tourist stay is 12 days, with most arriving from the USA, Canada, Europe, and Central America. Cruise ship visits are also rapidly growing; substantial investments by both Carnival and Royal Caribbean in new port facilities are now underway, with plans for up to 25 ships a week in 2009.

Roatan has its own international airport served by Delta, Continental, and Taca. Direct flights come from New York, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Toronto, and Milan, as well as the mainland and other Central American destinations, and service has been steadily increasing over time.

Roatan is also receiving special attention as the result of a new law designed to promote tourism investment, which makes it a tax free and duty free zone beginning in 2007. The new zone essentially eliminates income tax and import duties related to tourist focused business and development.
