Roatan Tourism

Roatan is an island in the western Caribbean and part of Honduras. One of the hidden gems of the Caribbean, Roatan is known for blue skies, clear turquoise waters, and a pleasing climate, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Roatan lies 30 miles off the coast of Honduras and is about 30 miles long and an average of 1 to 2 miles wide. Roatan has lush tropical forests, white sandy beaches, many small bays and coves, and dramatic rocky shores. As the island is hilly with a central ridge, there are beautiful ocean views almost everywhere.

With a total population of only 65,000, Roatan is still mostly undeveloped and pristine. Surrounded by 34 miles of coral reef, it has hundreds of wonderful dive sites, offering world-class scuba diving and snorkeling, as well as deep sea fishing and fly-fishing on the flats. The island has an excellent tourism infrastructure, with everything from full service resorts to smaller family run hotels, plus a large selection of villas, homes and condos for rent. While Honduras is a Spanish speaking country, Roatan used to be British, so English is still widely spoken by both islanders and visitors.

Roatan is one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the world. Honduras is a stable democracy that is encouraging tourism and foreign investment. As a Caribbean island with a sizable income base, Roatan is isolated from many of the mainland's problems, and receives a sizable portion of the country's tourism. Honduras experienced over 1.1 million tourism visits in 2006, which increased 18% to over 1.3 million in 2007. The average overnight tourist stay is 12 days, with most arriving from the USA, Canada, Central America and Europe. Cruise ship visits are also rapidly growing; substantial investments by both Carnival and Royal Caribbean in new port facilities are now underway, with plans for up to 25 ships a week in 2009.

Roatan Island Honduras has its own international airport, which is served by Delta, Continental, and Taca, as well as charters. Direct flights come from New York, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Calgary and Milan. There are also a variety of daily flights to the mainland, providing many more connections to the US, Canada, Europe, and Central America.

Visitors to Roatan find an island that is not only physically beautiful but easy to enjoy. The islands small size makes it easy to get around, but still offers a large variety of places to discover and activities to partake. Along with scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing, visitors enjoy beachcombing, hiking, horseback riding, canopy zipline tours, swimming with dolphins, sea kayaking, sailing, motor boating, scooter and motorcycle riding, dining, dancing, karaoke, shopping, and more. After all that, Roatan offers the chance to lay back and sip tropical cocktails while watching some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world.

Roatan Tourism is receiving special attention as the result of a new law designed to promote tourism investment, which made it a tax free and duty free zone beginning in 2008. The new zone essentially eliminates income tax and import duties related to tourism focused business and development. This law, known as ZOLITUR, has stimulated a large variety of new tourism related investment and infrastructure, including the 18 hole Pete Dye designed Black Pearl golf course currently under construction.
